Our Approach

While we hold deep respect for the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method, we also recognise the necessity of a more westernised approach to the practice. Traditional Ashtanga, with its emphasis on Sequence Adherence and Mysore Style, offers a strong foundation. However, as the practice's popularity has surged in the Western world, there has emerged a growing need for adaptations and comtemporisation. This includes the incorporation of led classes and subsequently, a full-series approach; a focus on alignment and anatomy; and a greater emphasis on making the practice more inclusive and accessible. These adapted Ashtanga characteristics allow for a broader range of practitioners to experience the transformative power of Ashtanga Yoga, while still honouring its traditional roots.

As such, the school offers both Ashtanga Led Classes and Guided Vinyasa Classes. The latter focuses on specific components of , using different approaches (e.g., Sattva Yoga And Iyengar Yoga), such as hip, shoulder, and chest openings, forward and back bending, and more; which are inherent to the practice but aren't directly addressed during the Led and Mysore Style classes. While these components naturally develop as you progress in Ashtanga, the Vinyasa classes provide a deliberate and direct approach to them, which can be applied to improve one's practice.

Class Progression

The organisation of our weekly classes is designed to provide a structured yet adaptable approach, accommodating various levels, expectations, and objectives for both beginners and advanced students. Our goal is to support personal growth and development, and we achieve this through a carefully curated progression.

Initially, we offer specific Vinyasa Flow classes that focus on various themes and incorpora-te different styles, ensuring a gradual adaptation to movement intensity, while synchronising it with the breath. For individuals with specific needs, Ashtanga Private Classes or Yoga Therapy may be recommended to address injuries or blockages.

As practitioners progress, they embark on the study of the first series of Asanas, typically after a period that can span from a few weeks to several months. This phase prepares students to transition into Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Classes. With increased class attendance and a deepening understanding of the first series of Asanas, students are encouraged to then advance to Ashtanga Led Classes or carry on with the Mysore Classes and some self-practice sessions. This comprehensive approach allows everyone to evolve at their own pace while benefiting from a well-structured and supportive learning environment.

Considering the needs of an average healthy person and those with specific requirements, such as injuries, health conditions, excess weight, recent surgical procedures, and more. The following table outlines the suggested path for each:
